With the Generation two update having been released about a month ago, most people are starting to look forward in what to expect for the next big update which is slated for April/May.
During a developer conference John Hanke, the CEO of Niantic, stated that there will be three more major updates during 2017. What these updates will be is unknown at this point, but so much information was given out at the developer conference that we have a pretty good idea for what is to come.
At the conference, Niantic put an emphasis on the five legendary Pokemon from Generation one: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mew, and Mewtwo. Legendary Pokemon will be coming to Pokemon GO this year, the only questions in everybody’s mind is when. John Hanke stated that he wants the Pokemon to have a special introduction, similar to Ditto, into the game. People have been able to obtain legendaries legitimately by Niantic outright giving them to the players. This was a mistake, however, and the Pokemon were removed from the Players accounts.
This is most likely the next feature coming to Pokemon GO, since it is already in development. Trading will not be over the internet like other Pokemon games, instead you will have to be in proximity with another player in order to trade with them. This is great for people who live in the city, but a disappointment for people in more rural areas who would like to play the game. Spawn rates have been increased for these players, but it will still feel like it is lacking.
Player vs Player Battling
Another thing hinted at during the interview is Player vs Player Battling (or pvp). This will probably come soon after trading since it uses many of the same features as trading (e.g. being in the same location).
Finally, John Hanke was quoted as saying this:
GYMS “SIMPLY DO NOT WORK AS WELL WE’D WISH” – John Hanke
This probably means that we will see an update to how gyms work. Currently at the moment it is simply tapping with the occasional swipe or use of a special move. Pretty boring. Hopefully this will be implemented in pvp as well.
If you don’t already know, Pokemon is currently on their 7th generation of different monsters. This means that Pokemon GO has a bit of “catching” up to do (get the pun). While John Hanke didn’t mention anything about Generation 3 Pokemon coming, it is possible that they will come.
What does this mean?
To recap, there are three different “big” updates coming to Pokemon GO. These updates could be any combination of the following (including not using some of them):
- Legendary Pokemon
- Updated Gyms
- Generation 3
Based on this information, here is my prediction as to when and what the updates will contain:
- Trading, and PVP – April/May
- Legendary Pokemon – July 6 (Pokemon GO 1 year anniversary)
- Updated Gyms/Generation 3 – October/November
Remember these are just my guess as to what and when it is coming out. I would like to hear your guess though, leave your guess in the comments section below, even if it contains a feature not on this list. Also add what features you would like to see in Pokemon GO, just remember to read the comment rules before posting!
